chains of communication

I took this only recently during a daytrip to the sea; in an alleyway that connected the city's newly arising and reconstructed waterfront with the older part of the town. The wall picture immediately captured my attention and made me thinking about nowaday's communication and its being sort of a limitation that increasingly detaches us from the physical world. But then, are 'real' chains to be prefered over digital ones?
